REVIEW: Hitman: Episode 4

If you weren’t entertained nor impressed by the summer bonus episode of Hitman, the Bangkok episode released this week would probably make you want to revisit the game and spend hours in it. This is probably the best episode so far I’ve played in terms of level design, storyline, and pure fun.

Agent 47 travels to Bangkok this time for a target that seems to be far less politically important. He’s going after a rockstar that allegedly has criminal implications involving the death of his then girlfriend. I honestly don’t understand why the agency who employs Agent 47 would even take on a contract so trivial, but I guess grieving parents’ money is still good money. Got to get that suit and polish those guns, right?

As soon as the cutscene ends, Agent 47 finds himself in this luxurious hotel resort surrounded by water and gold plated Buddhist temples with birds chirping in the background. If you are a curious soul like me, you’d probably want to eavesdrop on those hotel guests. To my surprise, one of them seems to bear striking resemblance to a real estate mogul running for president. He utters some odd sentences just like his real-life avatar.

One of the things I noticed about the Hitman episodes is that it is getting increasingly difficult to eliminate targets without resorting to opportunity kills. Although this might limit the freedom in play style, I found Bangkok’s kill opportunities very well designed. Each opportunity makes you feel like you are a detective trying to solve some mystery and unravel hidden truth. In order not to spoil the fun, I will just give out a string of clues: sex, audiotape, Reliant Robin Thai Edition. That should help you figure it out.

As you progress through the level, you will discover more details as to what happened to the girlfriend the rockstar allegedly murdered and it culminates in a cinematic cutscene after you finish the level. Agent 47 now starts to suspect there’s a mysterious client that seems to be behind all the hits. Can he get to the bottom of this? We’ll find out next month or whenever the next episode hits.

Summary

Overall, Hitman: Episode 4 keeps up the trend of excellent Hitman adventures which, while becoming harder, are starting to tie the story together. The game is getting really interesting now and feels more optimized than ever as well.
