Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a lighthearted and fun platforming adventure following Shantae, a magical genie and her adventures to save the day. With a variety of environments and enemies to defeat, the game stays fun and refreshing the whole time. I spent around seven hours playing the game and had an absolute blast!

The game is presented as a 2D platformer with side-scrolling combat and platforming. The environments are beautifully crafted and pop off the screen with intense colors. Performance was top notch, and never dropped a frame nor did I encounter any glitches or bugs during my time with the game.
The majority of the game revolves around you finding the parts necessary to finish your uncle’s ‘Dynamo’ invention. Finding the parts won’t be easy and will require you to help those around you. Assisting people around town might feel like side quests, but they are crucial to progressing the story. The way these are done feels old fashioned, there isn’t a quest log, which means you have to remember what your objective is at all times. You often need to trade items with your quest givers in order to get the parts you so desperately need to fix the Dynamo!
One of Shantae’s signature abilities is her ability to dance and transform into different animals. These transformations are plentiful and are necessary to find hidden objects in the environment and to fully explore the worlds! My personal favorite form was monkey form. In monkey form you have increased jump heights and can move much faster. This form makes it easier to survive platforming sections in one piece and to reach hidden gems/collectibles. Speaking of collectibles, there are a lot in this game. Each world has health increases, gallery keys, dances, and other miscellaneous objects to discover. I highly recommend revisiting an area when you unlock a new transformation dance because I can guarantee there is something new in that level to discover.
This game can be brutally difficult at times, but I believe it’s what sets this game apart from others. It feels old school and requires precise platforming in order to survive. One mistake can send you back to the beginning of the section. I love this and it pushed me to learn the levels inside and out.
Overall, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a fantastic game and provides several hours of fun and exciting entertainment. I highly recommend that you pick it up and save the day as Shantae.
