With all the recent rumors surrounding the possibility of new upgraded consoles it’s surprising that we haven’t had more cement proof but after AMD’s Q1 earnings call earlier this week we may finally have just that. During AMD’s earnings call, one thing they made sure to mention were the three semi-custom system-on-chip wins. AMD has been making hardware for consoles for a while with both current generation consoles using them so it would make sense to use upgraded versions of them in the new consoles. Since we are already expecting Microsoft to respond with their own console and Nintendo’s new console the “NX” it makes sense that 3 chips are being made. Also revealed was when AMD expects to start generating revenue for each of the chips with the first being in the second half of 2016 which based on all the hype seems to be the PS4 NEO and the other two launching next year.
With all the rumors coming out about the upgraded consoles what is your opinion on it? Personally, I think this could hurt consoles a lot since while it doesn’t split a console with games it does split it in hardware and will leave players that are just being able to afford the current generation’s consoles feeling betrayed that they are getting a lesser console and experience. Another big factor in this is how developers will handle splitting their time to support another new console and if it will effect the games. If the consoles do come out they need to launch with an option to trade in your current console towards the upgraded consoles for more off to really make a day 1 upgrade worth it. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft all need to handle their launches very carefully if they don’t want to anger console owners and with the PS4 NEO coming later this year it needs to be announced at E3 to let players start saving money for the console.
