Cuphead is one of next year’s most anticipated titles and ever since we got our first glimpse at the gameplay, we were hooked. The title is still in development and the creators of Cuphead are building upon it. Chad Moldenhauer, one of the programmers, recently sat down with G2G: Evolved and revealed much more about the game.
According to Moldenhauer, Cuphead is getting some major additions. Beforehand, the game was a string of boss battles linked together by an over world. Now, the title will be receiving platforming levels. This is a huge feature! Moldenhauer confirmed this by saying, “We are now currently working on a lot of the later areas of the game and building, polishing platforming levels among 99 other things. To sum it up: it’s going great!”
The developer also shared some details about Phil Spencer’s experience playing Cuphead. Apparently the game is also getting an easy mode because various gamers have differing skills when it comes to such titles. Moldenhauer added, “Phil Spencer did awesome when he played it for the first time. A moment we will never forget! We’ve always known that we need some form of easy mode in the game and we are actually in the final days of locking in how that feature will work within Cuphead. We still stand behind the fact that if someone really likes the game, they won’t have a problem playing through it all.”
When asked about how long the game would be, the developer said, “We don’t have any average times yet as there are still unfinished parts of the game, but we do know this: The people that played and defeated everything in our demo take about 2-2.5 hours. This includes the time to ramp up and get a good feel for the game. Since our demo is less than a fourth of the total game, that should give you a feel for what the average play time might be.” It looks like Cuphead should be a 10-hour experience given its difficulty. Maybe more.
Lastly, a question about Cuphead’s amazing aesthetics was asked. The Cuphead team created the visuals using the same techniques that Disney animators of old. Namely, pencil and paper with a light table. All the inking was done by hand so that the art stays true to the era. Moldenhauer said, “We study, study and then restudy cartoons of the era as an ongoing task to make certain that we are mimicking the artists of the old days.”
Cuphead looks like an amazing game and the fact that it’s getting platforming levels is welcome news. A 10-hour experience from such a small team is also commendable. I can’t wait to get my hands on it next year. Hopefully the wait won’t be too long! Be sure to check out the full interview at G2G: Evolved.
