Remember the Halo movie which has individuals like Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp tied to it? Well, Wired finally uncovered what happened to it. The fact that it wasn’t made can be attributed to multiple people being part of the project with varying ideas. Microsoft put forth rigid demands and the director has his own vision. Microsoft wanted control over merchandising rights, numerous tickets to the premiere, and other ludicrous concessions. Most of what Microsoft wanted is how studios recuperate their investment. They also wanted the studios to assure them of who would be part of the project.
Even if we consider those bizarre demands, the people associated with the project wanted to make the Halo film into a cyberpunk one. While a cyberpunk twist on the silver screen would’ve been amazing, it wouldn’t have been Halo. Factors and disagreements like these caused the deal to fall through. Hopefully Microsoft, with the guidance of Phil Spencer, can see past the pettiness and maybe one day we can finally get a Halo movie.
