Update: Microsoft confirmed the layoffs.
Today Petri reported that they received news from a trustworthy source that said Microsoft was expected to announce layoffs on Monday. Many months ago the company said that they would lay off 2,850 employees worldwide, the latest round is part of that and 700 people will be let go.
According to Petri, other sites are now hearing the same with layoffs expected to take place next week. Human resources has reserved a significant number of conference rooms on the company’s campus for this purpose. These cuts are not related to the acquisition of LinkedIn for those wondering.
We’ll update the story as soon as we have more information. The layoffs might be more because the company did take on 5,500 more employees due to the acquisition and there are bound to be redundancies there. A lot of factors will influence the amount of people laid off and considering that Donald Trump’s policies will probably be restrictive when it comes to hiring foreign workers or maintaining employees abroad, expect that number to rise.
