More in-depth specifications for the ‘Surface Phone’ have supposedly been leaked, via a source that has approached WMPowerUser. According to the source, the device will have multiple tiers of specifications, similar to how the Surface Pro 3 presents itself. The phone, tagged under the codename “Juggernaut Alpha”, will be a high end Windows Phone, and unlike previous flagship devices, will carry the Surface name, derived from Microsoft’s tablet range. This agrees with leaks that arose a few years back via GPS logs in Microsoft’s Campus, claiming that Juggernaut Alpha is the upcoming Surface phone.
Project Juggernaut Alpha, despite having a heroic codename, will supposedly use an Intel Atom processor, alongside 4GB RAM to support a 21MP Camera, and high resolution display.
Here are the supposed specifications:
• Display: 1440×2560 16:9 AMOLED 5.5″ ClearBlack Gorilla Glass 4
• Processor: Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit
• Camera: Back: 21MP PureView Zeiss 6-lens Front: 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle
• RAM: up to 4GB RAM (lower end with 3GB and higher end with 4GB)
• Operating System: Windows 10 Mobile (Current revision of the device is running 10.0.10514.19)
• Storage: Options will include 64GB and 128GB with MicroSD Expansion up to 256GB
• Surface Pen (Similar to Note 5),
• USB Type-C
• Wireless Charging
• Aluminium & Magnesium unibody
The screenshot also debuting with the leak, shows the device running Windows 10 Mobile preview.
While the details provided from WMPowerUser are realistic, little information has been provided backing the source. Being the intrigued person I am, and a short while of digging, it was immediately noticeable that certain elements of this leak were suspicious.
After looking into the Intel Atom X3 series specifications, it appears that many of the supposed features of the phone could not be possible with the chipset. The Atom x3 series is based on an older 28mm process, only has supports for resolutions up to 1920×1080, much smaller than the mentioned display resolution above. Smaller details, such as the USB Type-C support are also unlikely, as the SoC only supports USB 2.0.
While this means the above information has to be incorrect, it doesn’t mean that all of the above can be debunked. We can expect some of the features mentioned, but with small technical complications, the leak cannot all be correct.
