Supermassive Games, the developer behind the critically-acclaimed Until Dawn, which launched last year exclusively on PlayStation 4, wants to end its status as a PlayStation exclusive developer, embracing the multiplatform world when interviewed by MCV today.
“We’ve worked closely with Sony for as long as the studio has been around, so the past eight years,” MD Pete Samuels told MCV. “I’ve loved it, they are great to work with and we have a strong relationship with them. I think a lot of the work we do with them aligns well with what we want to do and where we want to go. But yes, we are an independent studio and we are keen, going forward, to bring our games to wider audiences than we have in the past. That’s what we are all about right now, and it’s an exciting time for us.”
This follows after Ready at Dawn, the developer behind The Order: 1886 left Sony, when the PlayStation exclusive failed to garner much success on the Sony platform. The game also received a lot of criticism for being a short “technical showcase” instead of a game. They are expected to show their new indie title Deformers at this year’s E3 keynote.
This news isn’t surprising, with so many game developers choosing to release their games on more than one platform. Microsoft has embraced this, offering developers a Windows 10 and Xbox exclusive deal, and games like Gears of War and Halo presumably will feature on both these platforms in the future.
