Rumours about an upgraded Xbox One or a quickly approaching successor to the console have been circulating ever since rumours of the PlayStation 4K hit the internet months back. Tom Warren, a journalist for The Verge, has claimed that “sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans” have said that the company is “testing a variety of Xbox devices”.
The fact that this source claims they are testing a multitude of “Xbox devices” and not just Xbox Ones or new consoles is probably the most interesting part of this statement. Just earlier this month the Lead Visual Designer of the Xbox One and 360 stated on his LinkedIn profile that he had supposedly worked on the Xbox neXt, what Microsoft claimed was just a codename for the Xbox One.
We can speculate all we want about this linking to the Xbox neXt or the recently leaked wireless chips that Microsoft are filing through the FCC but for now, and probably a long while, this is just speculation. The Verge’s source, however, did claim that “some of these prototypes have been tested with upgraded components you’d use to improve the performance of a PC gaming rig” meaning either Microsoft are looking into upgradable consoles or maybe a line of gaming PCs that use the Xbox OS, like a Steam Machine.
