Digital Foundry did an analysis on BioShock: The Collection running on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. While both titles feature 1080p 60 FPS visuals, the Xbox One version is much superior because it contains anisotropic filtering which is absent from the PlayStation 4 version for some odd reason.
For those wondering, anisotropic filtering is a method of enhancing the image quality of textures on surfaces of computer graphics that are at oblique viewing angles with respect to the camera where the projection of the texture appears to be non-orthogonal. Basically, it preserves more details than other means. The fact that it’s absent is a huge problem for PlayStation 4 because it results in an odd blurry image. You can read more about it here.
The difference in the image quality for close up objects is evident if you look at the stone pavement. The PlayStation 4 version is clearly blurry compared to the Xbox One version which appears significantly sharper. Hopefully 2K will patch the game on PlayStation 4 and enable anisotropic filtering but as the people over at Digital Foundry said, the same problem persists in many Unreal Engine 3 games on PlayStation 4 and hasn’t been fixed from what I understand. The game also suffers from significant performance issues on both consoles so it really does need to be patched.
