One of the most impressive titles shown off at Xbox’s E3 conference this year was Rare’s upcoming pirate multiplayer game, Sea of Thieves. Missing from Microsoft’s showcase, however, was the announcement of a release date for the title.
Aaron Greenberg, Head of Xbox Games Marketing, talked about the release window for the Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusive in a recent interview with YouTube and ex-IGN employees, Kinda Funny. During a conversation with the group, Greenberg said that the game would see a release window sometime close to that of Halo Wars 2 and Scalebound.
“Not far after we get into things like Halo Wars 2 in February and then we just keep kind of cranking as we go through. Sea of Thieves is coming out in the window, Scalebound, a lot more titles.”
While many of us can’t wait to get Sea of Thieves in our hands, Videogamer notes that the game may not release in a finished form. In a press release for the game, the title is described as “an evolving experience” which will “ in players’ hands early and growing thanks to community insights and feedback.” This has led many to believe that the game will actually launch in a beta state—maybe through Xbox’s preview program even—and not the kind of finished product that many of us are hoping for.
