Update: According to new rumors from September 28, 2016, the game might be a console exclusive to Xbox One like the first game.
One of the most popular games in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic could be coming to Xbox One according to a rumour from Cinelinx. The movie news site, which also covers major gaming news, reports that three sources have given information suggesting that the Star Wars classic may be coming to next-generation consoles.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a classic hit on the original Xbox, and a key title which helped shape the console’s future. The game was a console exclusive, and alongside sci-fi shooter, Halo, drove sales of the gaming platform.
The report states that the game will be remade for Xbox One, with a possibility on Playstation 4. Only details of an Xbox One version have arisen from sources, however with EA now commanding the Star Wars video game franchise, exclusivity is unlikely. It is claimed that the remaster is set to release in the second half of 2016, nearly one year after Star Wars: Battlefront releases. This announcement will supposedly take place towards the end of the year.
Previously, Head of Xbox at Microsoft, Phil Spencer, has stated that he would like to see a remake in the future, however as it is not a Microsoft IP, they have little control. Microsoft have worked close with EA on many occasions, delivering Titanfall and EA Access on Xbox One as exclusives. If they wished to see this remake, and EA had similar thoughts, the idea is not too abstract. Microsoft sent a cease and desist to Rum Runner last year, who were working on a fan remake of the game. This could be due to the potential product release next year, with similar aims to Rum Runner’s remake.
Not only have rumours fed this report, as numerous actions from involved companies have hinted at a revival of some sorts. The Steam edition of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II was given an update nearly a fortnight ago, which confused many users after a long silence. The game launched over ten years ago, and this large update’s reasoning still has not been brought to light. The update added new achievements, Steam Workshop and Steam Cloud support, and new display settings. Controller input support was also in the patch notes.
Cinelinx also mentions that two unrelated sources from Gamestop have stated rumours of this product have been spread around the company. While no evidence of these sources, and their claims has been provided, this rumour cannot be taken as any more. As the story progresses, we will make sure to give an update.
