The first details about Telltale’s Batman series have been revealed at the SXSW Gaming Expo today. Until now, information has been scarce regarding the game, but now we know some more about what we can expect when it releases, which Telltale has announced will be this summer.
Details from the panel today were as follows:
– Telltale believed that Batman was the perfect character for them to explore in a game, and it allows them to “dive deeper into the mind of the man behind the mask.” The player’s actions will have consequences that will impact Bruce Wayne’s life, and players will be able to approach different situations as either Batman or Bruce, with consequences on both sides.
– It will be a completely new interpretation of the universe, and will not be tied to existing Batman games, films, or comics. The story will focus on Bruce and not so much the extended “Bat-Family” characters like Robin or Nightwing. Other characters such as Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya will make appearances. Telltale is not announcing any details about the villains until closer to launch.
– Certain characters will have deeply personal relationships with Bruce. Decisions made as Batman or Bruce can affect these relationships.
– Gotham and its criminals will be shaped by the player’s actions.
– Telltale is committed to a “non-photorealistic interpretation of the universe.” The art style will have a “seamless living comic book art direction.” It will take inspiration from the works of over 75 years of artists such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams.
– Telltale’s Batman series will have an M (Mature 17+) rating, and will have a cinematic approach closer to the feel of an R-rated film.
