Halo: Combat Evolved will be inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame

Halo: Combat Evolved is set to be inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Created by Bungie, Halo paved the way for first-person shooters on consoles when it launched on Xbox in 2001.

Among this year’s other inductees are Donkey Kong, Pokemon Red and Green, and Street Fighter II. They will be on permanent display at the The Strong museum in Rochester, New York where the hall was established in 2015. An international committee of video game scholars and journalists chose this year’s inductees. The museum said that inductees are chosen based on their impact on the video game industry and pop culture and their longevity.

Strong Associate Curator Shannon Symonds said “Until Halo’s launch, the most successful shooters required a personal computer and the precision offered by a high-quality mouse. Halo proved a console could be just as effective, if not better, than a PC.

343 Industries Head Bonnie Ross took to Twitter to say what an honor it is to have Halo inducted and attributed it to the hard work from Bungie, the legacy that 343 inherited, and the passion of Halo fans around the world.
