Update: Nadella went further today and blasted the ban. He said that it was against the spirit of the United States and had there been a ban all those years ago when he came to America, he would not have been where he is today. Not only is the current administration hurting its image, but they’re also hurting the future of the country.
Microsoft’s Satya Nadella shared an email sent by Brad Smith which talks about the recent ban on Muslims from certain countries. While the ban is preposterous and goes against everything America stands for, Brad Smith explained the company’s position well. I feel it echoes the sentiments of the majority of Americans. I’ll share some of the most important parts of the correspondence below.
Smith said, “As a company, Microsoft believes in a strong and balanced high-skilled immigration system. We also believe in broader immigration opportunities, like the protections for talented and law-abiding young people under the Deferred Access for Childhood Arrivals Program…We believe that immigration laws can and should protect the public without sacrificing people’s freedom of expression or religion. And we believe in the importance of protecting legitimate and law-abiding refugees whose very lives may be at stake in immigration proceedings.”

Nadella added, “As an immigrant and as a CEO, I’ve both experienced and seen the positive impact that immigration has on our company, for the country, and for the world. We will continue to advocate on this important topic.”
I’m glad Microsoft is the first company to speak out against this ban. Hopefully Congress or Senate will step up and address this problem. As Vice President Mike Pence said, “Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional.” Unconstitutional being the important word here.
