Peter Moore thinks there may not be consoles in distant future

Consoles are a major part of the gaming industry, they are a cheaper alternative to their expensive PC counterpart. PS4 and Xbox are dominating in sales each month, gaining tens of millions in sales each year. They are incredibly popular among consumers. To some, it’s very hard to imagine that they would get rid of consoles, but an EA exec says it’s a very large possibility.

Speaking in an interview with The Daily Orange, Peter Moore said “I’m not sure there will be consoles, as we know them anymore, games will be accessed by streaming technology, so we don’t need hardware intermediaries in between the two.”

“If you and I want to play Battlefield 12 against each other, we’ll just jump into a game via whatever monitor we happen to have in our homes. It’ll be on a chip, rather than in a box.” Moore added.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Microsoft or even Sony decided to go this route, both have implemented a form of streaming with their new consoles. On Xbox One, you can stream your games from your console directly to your PC or even tablet as long as it’s on the same wi-fi signal. As technology progresses, it wouldn’t be hard to just get some sort of chip as Moore mentions and have it stream directly to your regular PC or TV as some TV’s now have internet access. It would allow a cheaper option than buying a gaming PC and you wouldn’t have to buy a brand new box. It would also more than likely eliminate having to upgrade to a new console generation every 5-8 years.

What are your thoughts of eliminating consoles? Would you buy into this new way of gaming or would you prefer to buy a new console each generation? Sound off in the comments below.
