Microsoft in talks to bring Oculus Rift to Xbox One, no concrete plans yet

A few months ago, Microsoft and Oculus announced that all retail Oculus Rift units would ship with an Xbox One controller in the box. Additionally, you’ll be able to stream Xbox One games in virtual reality through Windows 10. Yesterday, Minecraft was announced for Oculus Rift. It’s clear that both companies are working very closely and Oculus Rift might work natively with the Xbox One soon.

During an interview with Polygon, Nate Mitchell, the vice president of products at Oculus, was asked about the chances of seeing the Oculus Rift become a peripheral for the Xbox One. He said, “It has been a conversation, but I can say we’re not so close. What we were finding is that it’s hard enough to deliver a great experience reliably on Windows, never mind adding OS X and Linux to that, which are different beasts entirely. Because of that, we’ve been laser focused on getting Windows in awesome shape. No one is really thinking right now about bringing the Rift to a console, especially when the spec is so different from what we’re targeting right now. We’ll see. It’s not out of the question, but it’s not something we’re actively working on right now.”

It’s encouraging to see that the companies are talking about the possibility at least. However, would Oculus Rift even work on Xbox One? This question was also asked and Mitchell replied, “That’s the thing, you can absolutely deliver a great VR experience on Xbox One, what I should say is with the hardware that’s in the Xbox One.”

Maybe one day we’ll see Oculus Rift on Xbox One. Until then, we can all look forward to HoloLens and how it’ll work with the console. The future is definitely exciting for Xbox One owners.
