Sometimes the most surprising revelations about the gaming industry come across during interviews. When speaking to GameSpot, EA chief Peter Moore stated that it “doesn’t matter” if EA Access isn’t on PlayStation 4 because “it’s on Xbox One and those customers love it.” EA Access debuted on Xbox One a year ago and Sony carped that it didn’t “represent good value to the PlayStation gamer” because they would have to pay extra to access some games and discounts. According to many analysts, the reality was that EA Access directly competed with PS Now and the company couldn’t allow that on their platform.
Moore further went on to take a little quip at Sony’s expense. When GameSpot asked some banal question about his business decision regarding the program’s Xbox One exclusivity, Moore stated with a chuckle, “Well, Sony talked about it, ask them. There’s not much left for me to say.” He was obviously mocking the remarks about how EA Access wasn’t good value to their gamers. Choice is of paramount importance when it comes to how customers spend their finances. The more options the better as it gives us the ability to make informed decisions and choose what we feel suits our needs. Considering that Xbox One now features backwards compatibility and EA teased free access to backwards compatible games, EA Access might become the best subscription service out there.
EA Access costs $4.99 a month or $29.99 per year. Currently there are over a dozen titles available for free to subscribers. The latest addition was Dragon Age: Inquisition. EA Access brings blanket benefits beyond discounts and free games. Star Wars: Battlefront is coming to Xbox One subscribers a week early, which is likely to irk Sony’s teams who enjoy sole marketing rights for the new game. Early access combined with the discounts and free games seems like pretty good value to me.
