Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way…I am Bread is fun. Stupid fun to be exact. In I am Bread, you play as a piece of bread. Yes, you read that right, a piece of bread. Your goal varies level to level, but you always want to be nice and edible. Developed by the same studio that created Surgeon Simulator, I am Bread is their next wacky adventure.
The first level tasks you with becoming toast. That sounds like a simple task right? Wrong! Becoming edible toast is incredibly challenging and you must do so by avoiding objects around the environment that lower your “edible rating”. A big one to avoid is the floor, but there are plenty of items that lower your rating and avoiding them can be challenging.
At first the controls are terribly awkward (think Octodad), but you eventually get a little used to them. RB, RT, LB, and LT each control a separate corner of the bread. You move around the levels using a combination of the thumb stick and the aforementioned buttons. This can result in some hilarious traversal sequences. At one point, I ended up climbing up a wall and onto the top of the fridge so I could then jump. Unfortunately, I landed in the sink and I was “0% edible”. Oh, and I fell into a toilet once, so yeah. If you can’t tell, this game is crazy.
In addition to the story mode, I am Bread comes packed with other modes. One of my personal favorites was “Bagel Race”. In this mode you play as a bagel and your goal is to race around a track and go through every checkpoint as fast as you can. I know this sounds insane, but it’s hilariously fun.
At the end of the day, I am Bread is a game but it’s more like a gimmick. It doesn’t offer a compelling narrative or stellar gameplay but it is fun. Gamers who enjoy titles like QWOP and Manual Samuel will find I am Bread to be a blast despite it’s niche appeal to traditional players.
Summary
Overall, I am Bread is a hilarious adventure that might not appeal to everyone, but it is still fun anyways. I had a blast with it and for $13, it offers plenty of bizarre scenarios to warrant a purchase. Just remember I am Bread is the equivalent of a gag gift than a meaningful purchase on Xbox One.
