Hideki Kamiya unveils Scalebound JRPG gameplay at Gamescom, teases four-play co-op

The long awaited game Scalebound has finally shown its claws. Coming from the creators of Bayonetta and Metal Gear Solid: Revengance, Platinum Games finally showed off some of the eagerly awaited hack and slash title. The game stars a young man named Drew who wears rather fashionable headphones as the lead protagonist. Scalebound promises to bring a high-action gameplay style to it with excellent ideas. The addition of four player co-op certainly gives more options in moments where you face slightly more irritating obstacles.

Oh, did I also mention that the players can have dragons as companions, and you can transform into a not-so-subtle man-dragon as a combat option. The gameplay shows a beautiful landscape which I hope is open-world because I want to explore every corner of it. This game definitely just jumped to my must-have list!

Scalebound is a JRPG and features an inventory, loot, non-linear exploration, NPC cities, weapon durability, currency, in-game economies and more. From what I saw at Gamescom, it looked like it was an open world game, at least a multi-region open world game like The Witcher 3. For all those asking for an exclusive and amazing JRPG on Xbox One all these years, well, here’s your answer!

Scalebound takes place on Draconis, a magical world bound to a force known as the pulse. The pulse is what gives Drew his powers, and it’s what gives Draconis its unique appearance. Floating islands, massive twisting roots splitting the earth, and the huge warped creatures all are a result of the pulse.

Drew is bound to a dragon known as Thuban. Drew and Thuban are on a mission to save Draconis from an evil empire by recovering a mysterious ancient artifact. Thuban is the last dragon of his kind, and together with Drew, these adventurers form a unique bond.

Thuban the dragon is heavily customizable. You can swap his default model out for others, or just customise his skin. You can also give Thuban armor. The addition of armor comes at the cost of speed and agility.

The title also includes an emphasis on exploration and dungeon crawling. Yes, there’s dungeon crawling!
