Update: CD Projekt RED said they would implement cross-play for Gwent if Sony approved it. Tekken 7 developers also said that it was up to Sony if they would implement cross-play between Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
Today, Rocket League developers Psytronic announced that the much-anticipated cross network play feature they’ve been working on is ready for the mainstream gaming community. Microsoft has already authorized access to their service. Psytronic noted that the only roadblock to them rolling it out in less than 24 hours is Sony and its PlayStation Network.
“Right now, we’re literally at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side and we can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem. It literally takes a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we’re just waiting on the permission to do so.”
Microsoft made the dream of cross network play a reality earlier this year when they announced that their network was optimized and ready to support the ability to play between console networks and PC. Sony, however, stated that they already support play between PS4 and PC, but like we all know, is something that has been commonplace for years now.
“It could be tomorrow, it could be longer than that. We just don’t know – we’re anxiously awaiting that, just like the rest of our fans.”
It remains to be seen how the company who proclaims themselves ‘For the gamers’ handles the feature they haven’t been too enthusiastic about from the start. With Microsoft publicly announcing their willingness, Sony should have already made provisions for the feature. However, it is unsurprising for a company that still needs to fully roll out two-factor authentication on their network.
Once Sony response, we will update this article. Rocket League is available on Xbox One and other platforms and was awarded ‘Sports Game of the Year’ at the annual Game of the Year awards in 2015.
