Epic Games, the studio originally behind the Gears of War franchise, removed the monthly subscription fee for Unreal Engine 4 making it free for everyone. However, Epic Games will earn “a five percent royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter should a developer monetize a game or application built using Unreal Engine 4”. The change is effective immediately and the studio will issue refunds to current subscribers for their most recent month’s payment. Anyone who has ever paid for a subscription will also receive a $30 credit that can be used in the Unreal Engine Marketplace.
The full version of Unreal Engine 4 is available to developers and includes all of the tools Epic Games uses to make its own titles. The engine features game templates, content samples, and tutorials to assist individuals who haven’t used their software in the past. This change will lead to many new experiences and we can’t wait to play them.
