Download Destiny 2 for PC, Windows 11/10, Mac and iPhone (Free)

Destiny 2 is a free download on Windows PCs through Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store, and on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but Bungie makes no Mac or iPhone version.

The official link for each platform comes first, then the install steps per store, the current download size, what costs money, and fixes for downloads that stall or fail.

Which Destiny 2 download do you need?

Bungie supports Destiny 2 on Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, the Microsoft Store and the Epic Games Store. The base game is free on every one of them; expansions and add-ons are bought per platform and cannot be shared or transferred between them, even between the three PC stores.

Download Destiny 2 for Windows PC

All three PC stores install the same free game. Pick the store whose account you already use, because add-ons stay on the store where they were bought.

Install Destiny 2 through Steam

  1. Create a Steam account or sign in to your existing one, then select Install Steam on store.steampowered.com and install the Steam app.
  2. Open the Destiny 2 Steam page and select Play Game under Play Destiny 2.
  3. Install Destiny 2 from your Steam Library; the BattlEye anti-cheat comes with it.
  4. Launch Destiny 2 from the Steam Library. To use the Bungie.net forums and Destiny Companion features, link the Steam account to a Bungie.net profile.

Install Destiny 2 through the Epic Games Store

  1. Create an Epic Games account or sign in, then download and install the Epic Games Launcher; the launcher is required to play Destiny 2 from Epic.
  2. Open the Destiny 2 page on the Epic Games Store and add the free game to your account.
  3. Install Destiny 2 from your Epic Games Library.
  4. Link the Epic Games account to your Bungie.net profile, and make sure your Bungie Name is not blank.

  1. Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu and sign in with your Microsoft account; if you play on Xbox, use the same account you use on the console.

Destiny 2 and its expansions left Xbox Game Pass on console and cloud on December 8, 2021, and left Game Pass for PC on April 11, 2022. Expansions are now bought separately or in Destiny 2: The Collection.

How to update Destiny 2 after downloading it

Destiny 2 will not connect until the latest update is installed. An outdated copy shows the "Destiny Servers are not available" message on the Microsoft Store version, or error code SHEEP.

  1. Any platform: close Destiny 2 and restart it to start the update.
  2. Microsoft Store: select the . . . button next to your profile icon, then Downloads and updates, then Get updates.
  3. Xbox app for PC: select My Collection, then Manage Installs, and turn on automatic updates.
  4. Xbox Series X|S: on the Home menu select My Games and Apps, then Manage and Updates, select Destiny and select Update.
  5. PS5: on the Games tab, hover over Destiny, press Options on the controller and select Check For Update.

Do not interrupt an update download on a console; some consoles then re-download all previous patch data.

Fix Destiny 2 not downloading or installing

Console download stuck or stalled

Bad temporary data in the console cache, or an unstable wireless connection.

  1. Stop or delete the download.
  2. Shut the console down completely, unplug the power cord and leave it unplugged for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in, turn it on and restart the download from the Downloads queue in the Notifications menu.
  4. If progress stalls again, switch to a wired connection, or uninstall Destiny, clear the console cache again and reinstall it.

"Corrupted Data" error on Xbox or PlayStation

The download or install data was damaged.

  1. Stop or delete the download.
  2. Clear the console cache with the power-cycle above.
  3. Start the download again from the Downloads queue; if the error repeats, contact Xbox Support or PlayStation Support.

Not enough space to install or update

Some platforms need extra free space while an update pre-loads.

  1. Check the size for your platform in the requirements table; Steam needs up to 353.00 GB free during a pre-load and PS4 needs 235.32 GB.
  2. Delete or uninstall other files until the drive has that much free.
  3. Restart the download.

Windows Defender flags Destiny 2 files as malware

Windows Defender incorrectly detects specific Destiny 2 files as infected.

  1. Update the Windows Defender virus definitions.
  2. Run the scan again, then launch Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 configuration problems on PC

A bad CVARS.xml configuration file.

  1. Close Destiny 2.
  2. Delete CVARS.xml from \Users\USER_NAME\Appdata\Roaming\Bungie\DestinyPC\prefs\.
  3. Relaunch the game; it creates a fresh file and resets your settings to defaults.

Steam download errors or stuck updates

A damaged Steam download cache.

  1. Clear the Steam download cache using Valve's Clear Download Cache instructions.
  2. Restart Steam and resume the Destiny 2 download.

Epic Games Launcher errors with Destiny 2

Stale launcher webcache or an outdated Epic Games Launcher.

  1. Update the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher webcache using Epic's Troubleshooting the Epic Games Launcher instructions.
  3. Restart the launcher and install Destiny 2 from your Epic Games Library.

How to uninstall Destiny 2

  1. Xbox Series X|S: on the Home menu select My Games and Apps, select Games and highlight Destiny, press the View button, select Uninstall All and confirm with Uninstall All.
  2. PS5: open the Settings menu, then Storage and Games and Apps, select Destiny, select Delete and confirm with OK.
  3. Steam: uninstall Destiny 2 from your library, then remove BattlEye, which stays behind and needs manual removal after the game is uninstalled.
  4. Microsoft Store or Epic: uninstall Destiny 2 from the Xbox app library or the Epic Games Library.

Destiny characters and progression are not stored on the console, so uninstalling or clearing the console cache does not delete your Guardians.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is Destiny 2?

Bungie lists 180.90 GB on Steam, 180.65 GB on the Epic Games Store, 181.76 GB on the Microsoft Store, 195.36 GB on Xbox Series X|S and 179.23 GB on PS5. Steam and Epic need about twice that free during an update pre-load.

Can I play Destiny 2 on Steam Deck?

Not on SteamOS. Destiny 2 is not supported on the Steam Deck or under Proton unless Windows is installed and running, and players who try to bypass that block are banned. With Windows installed and running on the device, the Steam version is supported.

Can I stream Destiny 2 instead of downloading it?

On PlayStation, yes: cloud streaming of Destiny 2 on PS5 and PlayStation Portal is supported with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Destiny 2 left Xbox Game Pass on console and cloud on December 8, 2021, so Game Pass does not stream it.

Is Destiny 2 still on Battle.net?

No. Destiny 2 on PC moved to Steam on October 1, 2019, and is no longer accessible through Battle.net. Migration of Battle.net accounts to Steam ended on December 1, 2020, so new PC players download it from Steam, Epic or the Microsoft Store.

Is Destiny 2 cross-platform?

Yes. Cross Play lets fireteams form across all supported platforms and is on by default. Competitive modes such as Gambit and Crucible split into console and PC pools, and a console player in a fireteam with PC players is matched into the PC pool.

Do my expansions carry over if I switch platforms?

No. Cross Save moves your characters between platforms, but add-ons cannot be shared or transferred, including between Steam, the Microsoft Store and the Epic Games Store. Silver is shared only across Microsoft platforms on one Microsoft account.

Can you still download the first Destiny?

The original Destiny on PS4 and Xbox One no longer receives updates or new content. Its last expansion, Destiny: Rise of Iron, needs 55 GB on PS4 and 50 GB on Xbox One, while The Taken King needs 18 GB on PS3 and 16 GB on Xbox 360.

Why does Destiny 2 say servers are not available after downloading?

Destiny 2 is waiting for an update. The game refuses to connect until the latest patch is installed, so update it through Steam, Epic, the Microsoft Store, the Xbox app or the console, then launch it again.
