An update has begun to roll out on Xbox One consoles for Plex, a media streaming and playback application which allows users to play their digital media across any device that supports the player. The new update focuses on adding support for many features of the service, and refining current systems. This is most likely releasing in response to the Windows 10 launch later this month, where unified support across the Microsoft ecosystem is heavily promoted and encouraged.
Alongside improvements and fixes, the following features have been implemented:
- Music Support, allowing users to access music uploaded to Plex Media Server and played on the Xbox One. While background audio is currently not supported by the Xbox One operating system, music can be played in app, or when in snap mode.
- Playlists have been added, allowing you to sort and order music or video, for seamless playback.
- Xbox One SmartGlass is now supported by the app, for playback control using a separate device.
- Trailers are now placed before movie playbacks, similar to a cinema viewing.
- Support has been added for the .MKV file type, reducing time spent having to convert videos to play them on the Plex player
If you haven’t yet used the Plex service, there hasn’t been a better time. Make sure to check out our guide on how to set up Plex Media Server, and get your content online!
The Plex app is available now for free on Xbox One, Windows Phone and the Windows Store
