Fix Baldur's Gate 3 not downloading or installing
The install stops because there is not enough space
Baldur's Gate 3 needs 150 GB free, and the Steam store page lists an SSD as required.
- Check the free space on the SSD you picked for the install.
- Remove other games or files until 150 GB is free, or choose a different SSD in the launcher.
- Restart the download from the launcher's library.
Baldur's Gate 3 will not open on a Mac
The Mac build needs an Apple M1 chip or newer and macOS 14.7.1 or newer.
- Confirm your Mac has an Apple M1 chip or newer.
- Update macOS to 14.7.1 or newer, then launch the game again from Steam or GOG.
- On an Intel Mac, stream your copy through GeForce NOW instead.
Xbox Cloud Gaming will not start Baldur's Gate 3
Streaming needs both a purchased copy and a Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription.
- Confirm the game shows as owned on the Xbox store page with the account you are streaming from.
- Confirm an active Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription on the same account, with cloud playtime left this month.
- Use a supported browser such as Safari, Edge or Chrome on a 10Mbps or faster connection.
Online co-op will not connect on PS5 or Xbox
PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus, and the Xbox store lists an online multiplayer subscription (Game Pass Core or Ultimate) for console.
- Check that the console account has an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox online multiplayer subscription.
- Make sure every player has installed the latest update, since cross-play arrived in Patch 8.
- Invite the friend again from inside the game.
The game crashes after a recent update
A small update meant to fix corrupted savegames introduced crashes for some players, and Hotfix #36 was released to resolve them.
- Let Steam, GOG, the Xbox app or the console install the latest update before launching.
- Restart the PC or console after the update finishes.
- Load the save again; keep an older save as a backup if one file keeps failing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you download Baldur's Gate 3 for free?
No. Baldur's Gate 3 is a paid game on Steam, GOG, the Xbox store and the PlayStation Store, and it is not part of the Game Pass library. PlayStation Plus Premium members can play a 2-hour trial on PS5 before buying.
How big is the Baldur's Gate 3 download?
Steam lists 150 GB of available space for both Windows and macOS, and both platforms list an SSD as required. Plan for that full amount on a solid-state drive before starting the install, because a hard drive does not meet the requirement.
Is Baldur's Gate 3 on iPhone?
No. There is no Baldur's Gate 3 app for iPhone or iPad. You can stream a copy you own through GeForce NOW on iOS 15.4 or later with a gamepad, or stream the Xbox store version through Xbox Cloud Gaming with a Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription.
Does Baldur's Gate 3 run on Windows 11?
Yes. The minimum operating system is Windows 10 64-bit, and Windows 11 meets it. The Steam, GOG and Xbox store versions all install on Windows 11, and the Xbox store copy also plays on Windows 11 gaming handhelds through Xbox Play Anywhere.
Does buying Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox give you the PC version?
Yes, when you buy the digital version from the Xbox store. Baldur's Gate 3 is an Xbox Play Anywhere game, so one purchase installs on Xbox Series X|S and on a Windows 10/11 PC through the Xbox app, with shared saves and achievements.
Does Baldur's Gate 3 have cross-play?
Yes. Patch 8 added cross-play across PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox. The GOG version also supports cross-platform multiplayer with Steam. Up to four players can share a party online, and console players need the platform's online subscription for online play.
Can you play Baldur's Gate 3 offline?
Yes. Larian states the game plays offline, while multiplayer and some other features may need an internet connection. The single-player campaign is the mode to use without a connection, and online co-op needs one on every platform.
Is Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox One?
No native version is listed. The Xbox store lists Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and handhelds as the ways to play. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams to Xbox One consoles, so an Xbox One owner can stream a purchased copy with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
Does Baldur's Gate 3 work on Steam Deck?
Yes. Larian added a native Steam Deck build in Hotfix #34, so the Steam version runs directly on the handheld. Buy it on Steam and install it from the library on the Deck; Steam installs game updates automatically, including later hotfixes.
