How to make smooth stone in Minecraft Survival mode
Smooth stone takes two trips through a furnace. Cobblestone becomes plain stone on the first pass, and plain stone becomes smooth stone on the second.
- Mine stone with a pickaxe to collect cobblestone.
- Place a furnace and open it.
- Put the cobblestone in the top slot and fuel in the bottom slot.
- Wait for stone to appear in the output slot, then move it into your inventory.
- Put that stone back into the top slot of the furnace, with fuel below it.
- Take the smooth stone from the output slot once the second smelt finishes.
Load a full stack of cobblestone at once and the furnace works through it while you do something else. Then feed the whole stack of stone back in for the second pass.

What you need to make smooth stone
| Item | What it is for | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Cobblestone | The starting material for the first smelt | Mine stone with a pickaxe |
| Furnace | Turns cobblestone into stone, then stone into smooth stone | Eight cobblestone in a ring at a crafting table, center square empty |
| Fuel | Keeps the furnace burning for both passes | Any item that burns in the furnace's bottom slot |
| Stone | The input for the second smelt | The output of the first smelt |
Use a regular furnace for both passes. A blast furnace only speeds up ores and metals, and a smoker only cooks food.
Which way to get smooth stone should you use?
| Your situation | Method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing a normal Survival world | Smelt cobblestone twice in a furnace | Works with no cheats and only basic materials |
| Building in a Creative world | Take it from the Creative inventory | Unlimited blocks, no smelting |
| Survival world with cheats turned on | Use the /give command | Instant blocks without changing game mode |
| Need smooth stone slabs | Smelt smooth stone, then use a stonecutter | One smooth stone becomes two slabs |

Supported platforms for smooth stone
Smooth stone is in both editions of Minecraft, and both make it by smelting plain stone in a furnace, so the Survival steps work on every platform.
| Edition | Platforms | Smooth stone |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Windows, Mac and Linux | Smelt stone in a furnace |
| Bedrock Edition | Windows 10, Windows 11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and mobile | Smelt stone in a furnace; block ID minecraft:smooth_stone |
Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition includes both versions, and the unified launcher switches between them.
Where to find smooth stone in Creative mode
- Open a world in Creative mode.
- Open your inventory.
- Type smooth stone into the search box of the Creative inventory.
- Select the smooth stone block from the results.
- Drag it into a hotbar slot, then close the inventory and place it.
Give command for smooth stone
The /give command needs a world with cheats on. In Bedrock Edition, turn on Activate Cheats in the world settings, then open chat to type the command.
/give @s minecraft:smooth_stone
Gives you one smooth stone block. @s selects the player running the command; replace it with a player name to give the block to someone else, and add a number after the block name to give more than one.
You should see: The smooth stone block appears in your inventory.
The slab has its own ID: use minecraft:smooth_stone_slab in the same command to get smooth stone slabs directly.
Things to make with smooth stone
| Item | Recipe | Where you make it |
|---|---|---|
| Blast furnace | Five iron ingots, one furnace and three smooth stone: iron across the top, iron-furnace-iron in the middle, smooth stone across the bottom | Crafting table |
| Smooth stone slab | One smooth stone gives two smooth stone slabs | Stonecutter; Java Edition also crafts them from smooth stone |
| Building block | Place it as it is for a flat gray surface | Anywhere |
The blast furnace is the main reason to make smooth stone early, and picking up smooth stone unlocks its recipe. The stonecutter that cuts the slabs takes one iron ingot over three plain stone, not smooth stone.
How to craft a Minecraft grindstone
The grindstone does not use smooth stone. Its recipe calls for a regular stone slab, which is a different block from the smooth stone slab.
- Put one plain stone into a stonecutter and take the two stone slabs it makes.
- Collect two sticks and two wooden planks of any type.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place a stick in the top-left square, the stone slab in the top-middle square and a stick in the top-right square.
- Place one plank in the left square of the middle row and one in the right square, leaving the center empty.
- Take the grindstone from the output slot.
How to tell you have smooth stone and not stone
- Hover over the block in your inventory and read its name: it should say Smooth Stone, not Stone.
- Put the block into a stonecutter: smooth stone offers smooth stone slabs, while plain stone offers stone slabs.
- Try the blast furnace recipe: it only completes with smooth stone in the bottom row.
Fix smooth stone not appearing in the furnace
The furnace gives stone instead of smooth stone
Cobblestone only reaches plain stone on the first smelt.
- Take the stone out of the output slot.
- Put it back into the top slot of the furnace.
- Add fuel and wait for the second smelt to finish.
A blast furnace will not accept cobblestone or stone
The blast furnace smelts ores and metals; stone and smooth stone are regular furnace recipes.
- Move the cobblestone or stone to a regular furnace.
- Keep the blast furnace for ores and metal items.
The /give command for smooth stone does not work
Cheats are off in the world, or the block name is mistyped.
- Open the world settings and turn on Activate Cheats.
- Retype the command as /give @s minecraft:smooth_stone with an underscore between the words.
- Press Enter and check your inventory.
The furnace stops partway through a stack
The fuel ran out.
- Open the furnace and check the bottom slot.
- Add more fuel.
- Smelting resumes as soon as the new fuel catches.
Smooth stone in Minecraft FAQ
Can you craft smooth stone at a crafting table?
No. Smooth stone comes from smelting plain stone in a furnace, or from the Creative inventory and the /give command. Putting cobblestone or stone in a crafting grid does not produce it, so build a furnace and run the stone through it a second time.
Can you smelt smooth stone in a blast furnace?
No. Turning cobblestone into stone and stone into smooth stone are regular furnace recipes. A blast furnace only speeds up the smelting of ores and metals, so use an ordinary furnace for both passes.
How many times do you smelt cobblestone to get smooth stone?
Twice. The first smelt turns cobblestone into plain stone, and the second smelt turns that stone into smooth stone. Each pass needs fuel, so keep the bottom slot of the furnace stocked for both runs.
What is smooth stone used for in Minecraft?
Smooth stone is needed to craft a blast furnace, which takes three smooth stone with five iron ingots and a furnace. It also cuts into smooth stone slabs on a stonecutter and works as a flat gray building block.
How do you make smooth stone slabs?
Put one smooth stone into a stonecutter and take the two smooth stone slabs it produces. Java Edition also crafts the slabs from smooth stone, and /give @s minecraft:smooth_stone_slab hands them over directly in a world with cheats on.
Is smooth stone the same in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Both editions make smooth stone by smelting plain stone in a furnace, and both use three of it in the blast furnace recipe. The Bedrock block ID is minecraft:smooth_stone, which is also the name the /give command accepts.
Does a grindstone need smooth stone?
No. A grindstone uses a regular stone slab, two sticks and two wooden planks. The smooth stone slab is a different block and does not fit the recipe, so cut one plain stone on a stonecutter for two stone slabs instead.
