On the Azure blog, Anil Murching who is the Senior Program Manager of Azure Media Services, announced that Microsoft started conducting trials of HEVC encoding and delivery. For those that don’t know, HEVC encoding supports UHD 4K resolutions, including 4096×2160 pixels at 60 FPS. It also supports HDR content for HDR10 media profiles with bit depth of 10-bits per color sample.
According to MSPoweruser, TSUTAYA, a video rental and online on demand company based in Japan, is currently testing such a workflow, and Microsoft is accepting applications from other services who are interested in the trial.
