Sony Online Entertainment sold off, former exclusives headed to Xbox under Daybreak banner

Sony Online Entertainment; the company that created a number of popular MMOs such as DC Universe Online, Everquest, Planestside and most recently H1Z1, has been sold off by Sony and will now operate under the name Daybreak Game Company. Free from the shackles of platform exclusivity, the studio has now promised to bring its work to Xbox.

John Smedley, the president of Daybreak, said they are “excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies,” referring to the investment company that purchased the studio. “We are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming. We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”

It’s great news for Xbox gamers, as Smedley confirmed on Twitter that “new platforms” did indeed mean that his company’s games will be coming to Xbox.

Sony Online Entertainment had been in the news recently as the company that made a complete hash of the launch of its latest game; H1Z1. Despite this, the studio has a long history of success trailing back to 1996 and a number of still in-development games, including Everquest Next.
