Gears of War: E-Day gets its full release on October 6. Early access opened on October 1, so the game has already been playable for five days.

Xbox announced the early access start on Xbox Wire alongside a launch gameplay trailer. The game’s Steam store page lists October 6, 2026 as the release date.
The Coalition developed it. Xbox Game Studios is publishing.
Is Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass?
Yes. Xbox lists E-Day on Game Pass in its rundown of the October 5 to 9 releases.
It is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title. One purchase covers Xbox Series X|S and Windows, and subscribers do not buy it separately.
Xbox names Game Pass without naming tiers in that post, so check which tier you are on before tomorrow.
What the campaign covers
Xbox describes an origin story built around Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, set as the Locust Horde first erupts from below.
That places it before the original trilogy, on the day the series has always called Emergence Day.
The Coalition has run the series since Microsoft bought it. Much of its reach was built in the Xbox One era, when Gears of War 4 broke into the top three US sellers and the studio began testing cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10. Play Anywhere is the settled version of that idea.
What else launches on October 6
E-Day is not alone. Xbox puts STAR WARS: Galactic Racer and KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] on the same day.
Galactic Racer is full price: its Steam page asks $59.99 in the US. It is Play Anywhere but not on Game Pass.
So the two headline launches of the day sit on opposite sides of the subscription. Across October 6 to 9, Xbox counts more than 20 new titles, and only E-Day and the October 8 Metroidvania Echo Weaver carry a Game Pass tag.
Neither Xbox nor The Coalition has published file sizes or performance modes, and Xbox has not said whether the early access and launch builds differ.
Early access is also a quieter staggered launch. Players who got in on October 1 have had five days before reviews and the wider audience arrive.
That smooths server load and gets word of mouth moving before launch day.
Xbox has been building to this for weeks, with an Emergence Day event in Los Angeles in late September and the launch trailer attached to the early access announcement.
For a publisher that spent much of 2026 restructuring, E-Day is the release the platform needs to land cleanly.
Gears has always been an Xbox tentpole, and a prequel aimed at the series’ origin is the safest possible footing for a relaunch year. The risk is familiarity rather than ambition.
