The Xbox app is a free download for Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs on version 22H2 or higher and for iPhone and iPad on iOS or iPadOS 15.1 or later, but there is no Mac app, so on a Mac the official route is Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser at xbox.com/play.

Which Xbox app download do you need?
Each device gets the app from Microsoft or from the platform's own store. Match your device to a row and use that link.
| Your device | Get it from | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC or handheld, version 22H2 or higher | Xbox PC app on xbox.com | The Xbox PC app: Game Pass library, Store tab, cloud gaming, remote play, chat, and installed games from other PC storefronts in one library |
| Windows PC, installed through the Store | Microsoft Store | The Xbox PC app, listed in Microsoft Store as XBOX |
| iPhone or iPad on iOS / iPadOS 15.1 or later | App Store | The XBOX mobile app (97 MB) |
| Android phone or tablet on Android 8.0 or higher | Google Play | The XBOX mobile app |
| Mac | xbox.com/play | No app; Xbox Cloud Gaming runs in a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari |
| Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console | Xbox on mobile | The XBOX mobile app on your phone installs games to the console remotely |
Download the Xbox app for Windows 11 and Windows 10
Microsoft publishes the Windows app as XBOX in Microsoft Store under the package name Microsoft.GamingApp; the Xbox PC app page on xbox.com carries its own download button.
- Xbox PC app on xbox.com: select Download the app; the app system requirements are listed further down the page
- XBOX in the Microsoft Store (2609.1001.16.0): free; Microsoft Store installs the app and updates it automatically
How to install the Xbox app on Windows 11 and 10
- Confirm the PC runs version 22H2 or higher: right-click Start, choose Settings, select System > About, and read the version under Windows specifications.
- If Windows updates installed recently, restart the PC before installing; Microsoft Store will not install apps on a PC that was updated but not restarted.
- Open the Xbox PC app page and select Download the app, or open the XBOX listing in Microsoft Store and install it from there.
- When the install finishes, open the Xbox app from Start > All apps and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Check it worked: your games library and the Store tab load, and pressing Win+G in a game opens Xbox Game Bar for chat.
On a PC in Windows S mode, playing games through the Xbox app may require switching out of S mode.
Is the Xbox app free?
Yes. Microsoft Store lists the Xbox app as a free download for Windows, and the App Store lists the XBOX app for iPhone and iPad as Free. What costs money is what you buy through the app: Game Pass, which is sold separately, and the PC games, DLC and add-ons in its Store tab. Game Pass subscribers get a discount on games in the Game Pass library that they buy to keep.
Do you need Game Pass to use the Xbox app?
No. With a free Microsoft account the app handles your games library, chat, friends, the Store tab and free-to-play cloud games such as Fortnite. Game Pass adds a game library and cloud playtime, and the plans differ on both.
| Plan | Games | Cloud gaming | Also includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | 50+ games on console, PC and more devices | 5 hours/month | Online console multiplayer |
| Game Pass Premium | 200+ games, plus select new Xbox-published games within a year of launch | 10 hours/month | Online console multiplayer |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 500+ games, with select new games on day one | 15 hours/month | Online console multiplayer, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics |
| PC Game Pass | Hundreds of PC games, played through the Xbox app for Windows | Not included | New games on day one |
| No subscription | Games you own or buy | Select free-to-play games such as Fortnite | Chat, friends and the Store tab |
Cloud playtime hours do not stack: with two eligible Game Pass subscriptions, the one with more hours applies.
Xbox app system requirements and download size
| Platform | Requirement | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10/11, version 22H2 or higher; 720p display | 150MB of storage for the app; games need their own space |
| iPhone and iPod touch | iOS 15.1 or later | 97 MB |
| iPad | iPadOS 15.1 or later | 97 MB |
| Android | Android 8.0 or higher | Not stated on Google Play |
| Cloud gaming on a phone or tablet | iPhone on iOS 14.4 and later, iPad on iPadOS 14.4 and later, Android 12 and later; 5GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data | No install in the browser |
System requirements for games vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.
Can you download the Xbox app on Mac?
Not as an app. The PC app requires Windows 10/11, and the App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Vision, not Mac. On a Mac, open xbox.com/play in a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari. Xbox Cloud Gaming in the browser streams free-to-play games like Fortnite with a free Microsoft account, and hundreds more with Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential. Some cloud games accept a mouse and keyboard in a compatible browser on Windows, macOS or Linux; for the rest, connect a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB.
Download the Xbox app on iPhone, iPad and Android
The XBOX mobile app handles chat and parties, game clips and screenshots from your console, Game Pass browsing, purchases, Rewards points and remote installs to your Xbox. Cloud gaming on a phone or tablet runs at xbox.com/play, and remote play streams games installed on your console through xbox.com/remoteplay.
- XBOX on the App Store (2609.3.1 · 97 MB): free; iPhone and iPod touch on iOS 15.1 or later, iPad on iPadOS 15.1 or later; rated 13+
- XBOX on Google Play: Android 8.0 or higher; rated Teen; 100M+ downloads
Select cloud games support touch controls on a phone or tablet; look for Play with touch or the touch icon when browsing games.
How to update the Xbox app on Windows
Microsoft Store delivers Xbox app updates automatically on Windows 11 and Windows 10, with an option to pause them. To pull an update straight away:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Check for Updates.
- Let the XBOX update install, then reopen the Xbox app.
- On iPhone and Android, update XBOX from the App Store or Google Play like any other app.
Xbox app not downloading or installing on PC
Microsoft Store will not show the Xbox app or the install button is missing
Microsoft Store hides or blocks apps that are not compatible with the device, and the Xbox app needs Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher.
- Right-click Start, choose Settings, select System > About, and check the version under Windows specifications.
- If it is older than 22H2, install the pending Windows updates and restart the PC.
- Check that Microsoft Store is signed in with your Microsoft account and that Microsoft family settings are not hiding apps on a child account.
The download stalls or Microsoft Store misbehaves
Microsoft Store needs a reset, or Windows updates were installed without a restart.
- Restart the PC if Windows updates installed recently.
- Press Windows key + R to open a Run box, enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
- A blank command prompt window opens for about ten seconds, then Microsoft Store opens; search for XBOX and install it again.
The Xbox app opens with missing content, or Gaming Services will not install
Gaming Services failed to install or update on the PC.
- Open the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC page on Xbox Support.
- Download and run the tool, then open the Xbox app again.
The Xbox app opens but is not running correctly
Windows can repair or reset an installed app that is not running correctly.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, open Advanced options and select Repair.
- If that changes nothing, select Reset, then sign in to the app again.
Error 0x80070199 when installing or updating a game
Error 0x80070199 occurs when installing or updating a game on a PC, and Microsoft's first fix is repairing that game.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for the game, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Return to the Xbox app and resume the installation or update.
Error 87E0000F when downloading a game or app
The Xbox service is temporarily unavailable, or the PC has a partial game or app installation that must be uninstalled first.
- Cancel the download in the Xbox app.
- If part of the game is installed, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Download the game again.
Games will not install to an external drive
The external drive is not configured for Xbox games.
- Run the Xbox app's Drive Compatibility Tool, which configures external drives attached to a PC so Xbox games can be installed and played from them.
- Install the game to that drive from the Xbox app.
How to uninstall the Xbox app
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select More > Uninstall, and confirm.
- Or select Start > All apps, right-click Xbox and select Uninstall.
- To reinstall later, open Microsoft Store, go to Library, find XBOX and select Install.

How do you cancel Game Pass from your Microsoft account?
Head to the Subscriptions page of the Microsoft account website and log in with the account that pays for Game Pass. Find the subscription, select Manage, then Cancel, and follow the instructions. Can you play Xbox games in the cloud without Game Pass?
Yes, but only select free-to-play games such as Fortnite, which stream with a free Microsoft account in a supported region. The rest of the cloud library needs Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential, and PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming.
