OPINION: Here’s what Surface Phone may look like based on patent filing

We recently went through the reveal trailer for Project Scorpio and came up with what we thought was represented in the video. While it may not have been what people expected, we think it’s an accurate representation of the prototype teased in the trailer. Well, today we’re going to do the same for the Surface Phone.

As you know, patents regarding the Surface Phone appeared a few days ago and they show a folding device with a curved touchscreen like the Samsung Galaxy Edge. The device can become a phone if you fold it and a tablet if you place it in the supine position.

The sketches provided in the patent filing were rudimentary and they didn’t explain how the hinge worked. So, we did some digging and looked at other Microsoft patents. It seems that the hinge on the Surface Book is the only one capable of maintaining its shape and remaining sturdy enough to accommodate phone and tablet mode.

In order to show you what we thought the console may look like based off the trailer, we got designer Jay Williams to help us out. He made a detailed sketch of what the phone might be like. This is the first step in order for creating a render.

As always, we also got Tom, better known as the Xbox Pope, to create a render for us. It’s exactly what we think the phone will look like given what we could see from the patent images. I hope it does look like this as it’s a sleek and modern design. However, patent filings change and we’ll hopefully find out what the final product resembles. Until then, enjoy the concept.
