During an interview with the CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, she was asked about the console hardware design wins that were made public earlier, when AMD announced that they had secured hardware deals for three upcoming consoles. At the time it was well known that Sony was working on a new system called the PlayStation Neo, which will launch soon, but the other consoles were pure speculation.
“Microsoft also announced their next-generation game console codenamed Project Scorpio for the 217 holidays. Project Scorpio is designed to be fully compatible with existing Xbox One software while leveraging AMD leadership gaming technology to create more immersive 4K and VR gaming experiences. Project Scorpio is one of the semi-custom design wins we communicated previously”
Su revealed that the Xbox Scorpio was one of the design wins they announced earlier, which leaves the final win to Nintendo and their unannounced NX console. However, she didn’t go into much detail about the console and the hardware that powers it, but that is to be expected.
“Last Quarter at E3, Microsoft announced two new members of the Xbox One family, powered by AMD. The Xbox One S is the slimmest Xbox console ever, and the first to support HDR. The system is expected to go on sales in the coming weeks,”
Microsoft stunned their competition at E3 when they announced the Xbox One S, the most affordable Console/UHD 4K Blu-Ray player, which supports HDR and is 40% smaller than its forebear this year. Microsoft then went on to show their hand for the upcoming hardware refresh by pre-announcing the six teraflops Xbox One Scorpio. The console is 50% faster than the PlayStation Neo, and will launch in the holiday of 2017.
