GameStop won’t sell Xbox One and PS4 bundles with digital codes

You may have heard of GameStop, the large game retailer, infamous for ripping you off when you want to trade your old games in. GameStop has announced that they will stop selling digital game codes with Xbox One and PS4 bundles. However, if you choose to buy a console from GameStop, you will receive a physical copy of a game. GameStop is making its own bundles and while you get a physical copy, you might not get the other benefits that come with a proper bundle with a digital code.

For example, last month, a Madden 16 bundle was announced for Xbox One. It included a 1TB Xbox One, a digital code for Madden 16, and 1 free year of EA Access. However, if you purchase the bundle from GameStop, you will receive a 1TB Xbox One and a physical copy of Madden 16. No EA Access here. EA Access is an important part of the purchase because you can play the game almost a week before anyone else. I would still go for the digital bundle. All of my 141 games on Xbox One are digital.

Paul Raines, GameStop’s CEO, elaborated on the digital code bundles. He said:

“If…the platform holders…continue to put in free games as promotional items, we anticipate that at GameStop you’ll see more physical bundles from third parties as opposed to digital bundles…We choose not to participate in the digital bundles.”
