Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra teases ability to gift games on Xbox One

Xbox’s Mike Ybarra, director of program management, was tweeting about the new Xbox 360 update that released this week. He said, “Hey, we talk about Xbox One a lot but the System Update for 360 that went out this morning is great. Activity Feed, gifting, cloud increase!”

His tweet prompted me to ask about this new gifting feature that is getting very little attention by really anybody. I thought it was about gifting games but it turns out you can gift virtual currency. Not knowing this I asked, “Woah woah woah…Gifting? Like gifting of games? When’s that coming to the Xbox One?”.

He answered with, “You can gift virtual money, not games. Direct games is on our list to get to, just not yet.”

I’d say it’s safe to assume that we will get the ability to gift games, similar to Steam where you can gift any game you haven’t played to a friend, some time soon after the upcoming November update.

Like I mentioned before, the Xbox One is getting a massive update in November. It’ll add new features, change the dashboard, and add over a hundred Xbox 360 games to the backwards compatibility library! Xbox Preview Program members will get a chance to test the update in the coming weeks, the update will roll out in waves starting with the people who have given the most feedback in the program.
