Respawn announces Titanfall mobile games, free-to-play version coming soon

Remember the 2014 multiplayer FPS game, Titanfall? Well, it sounds like there are new approaches to the Titanfall franchise coming in 2016. Respawn Entertainment has signed a deal with Nexon in order to create “a whole new type of game” aimed at the IOS and Android markets. Respawn and Nexon have stated that this will be a “multi-game, multi year” project. The two companies will also be cooperating with Particle City, a small studio that used to be known as Nuclear Division, and have confirmed that the mobile games will not interfere with Respawn’s development of Titanfall 2, which is being published by EA and is expected to release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC sometime late 2016 or early 2017.

Mobile video games have been a great source of revenue in recent years, and many developers have already fled the console and PC scene entirely. Konami, for example, recently announced that it might from now on exclusively develop mobile games, apart from PES. These mobile Titanfall games will likely be very different from the classic first person shooter version of Titanfall that we know and love. “We’re not of the view that you take a first-person shooter that’s great on a console and PC and just put it on mobile,” Nexon CEO Owen Mahoney said. “You have to work with what the platform can do.” Nexon has created several IOS games previously, such as DomiNations and Heroes of War: Orcs vs Knights. Both of these games are very similar to Clash of Clans or Game of War, extremely popular city-building games which rely on users to spend real money in order to advance in-game time. Additionally, Respawn boss Vince Zampella says that he is looking for a “shorter term gaming experience, something that adds value to the main game — games where I want to check in multiple times a day, not the same experience ported over.” The “check in multiple times a day” aspect is certainly something that we see in games like Clash of Clans. Who knows, perhaps we’ll get something as absurd as Titancrush Saga. I think these upcoming Titanfall games will share a lot of qualities with other free to play mobile games, and I don’t think that’s necessarily a good thing.
