According to sources speaking with Variety, actor Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in a movie based on The Division from Ubisoft.
While it is said that the studio is still looking for someone to pen the script, Gyllenhaal will be attached as a producer, much like how Michael Fassbender is producing and starring in the Assassin’s Creed movie as well, another upcoming film based on a Ubisoft game.
The Division launched on March 8, 2016 and was said to be the industry’s biggest launch for a new IP, generating around $330 million in under a week. Taking place in New York City after a smallpox pandemic, players take on the role of U.S. Government sleeper agents who must help the city after the outbreak.
Video game movies historically have never been fantastic, but hopefully The Division movie will be more well received than Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which also starred Gyllenhaal.
