Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson joins Microsoft

Casey Hudson, former Bioware project lead on games such as Mass Effect, has joined Microsoft Studios as a creative director. Microsoft state that his new role will involve exciting new technologies including their new Hololens augmented-reality headset. Hudson will be reporting to Kudo Tsunoda, CVP of Next Gen Experiences at Microsoft Studios, with the goal of working on more Xbox related projects, and has stated his honour and excitement at working with technology that will “fundamentally advance” the industry.

“As Creative Director at Microsoft Studios, my primary focus will be the creative direction of HoloLens Experiences. I am extremely passionate about the potential of this kind of technology, as anyone who’s talked with me over the last couple of years can attest. I feel that the work being done at Microsoft on mixed reality and holographic computing will have a tremendous impact on how all of us interact with technology in the coming years. It’s an honor to be able to join such an incredibly talented team, and to work on something that will fundamentally advance the role computers play in our daily lives.”

Despite his statement that he is looking forward “to being able to influence the full-spectrum experience on HoloLens, from hardware to OS, to applications and games”, his work with Hololens will unquestionably be primarily the latter, a fact cemented by his ambition to work on “innovative new Xbox titles.”

His 15 year career at Bioware not only involved creative direction on games such as the Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars properties including KOTOR, but also the business aspects of the company’s endeavours, in his other role as an executive producer. It this this “full-spectrum” approach to business that has surely impressed Microsoft as they look to expand content creation efforts for their new technology.
