Fable Legends will utilize dedicated servers and cloud computing

Raymond Arifianto, Lionhead’s Engineering Lead, just revealed that Fable Legends would utilize dedicated servers. The team tried using peer-to-peer networking but it wasn’t an optimal experience. They decided to go with dedicated servers because of the stability and reduced latency they offer. Titanfall, Forza Motorsport 5, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection are some of the games that already rely on this technology.

According to Microsoft, there are a multitude of other benefits that accompany dedicated servers. The environment provides extra security. Simulation, physics, damage, loot, rewards, and experience are just some of the calculations done by the server. This makes the experience fair for everyone and minimizes cheating. As alluded to earlier, there is no host advantage so everyone is on a level playing field.

Dedicated servers also enabled the studio to implement cross-platform voice chat between Windows 10 and Xbox One users. All of these details make Fable Legends one of the most interesting titles to grace any console. The fact that it is also one of the first DirectX 12 games is an added bonus. We can’t wait to play this free-to-play game when it releases later this year.
