Konami has joined forces with Sophie De Oliveira Barata and her team (including engineers, roboticists, and product designers) to develop a prosthetic limb, inspired on the bionic arm that Snake has in the new Metal Gear Solid game, for James Young, a 25-year-old gamer, and fan of the MGS franchise, that has lost an arm and a leg when he was pulled onto the tracks between two trains of the London DLR train system. However, he’s since taught himself to play games one-handed.
This project, called “The Phantom Limb Project”, is a collaboration, fusing the worlds of artistry, medical technology, robotics and engineering with the world of video games. Their task is to create a bespoke prosthetic limb for an amputee gamer, inspired by the world of Metal Gear Solid, using cutting edge and innovative technologies.
You can check out the official blog of The Phantom Limb Project where will be uploaded a 3-part documentary about the creation of the prosthetic limb.
