Xbox and games are vital to Microsoft’s future says Satya Nadella

When one thinks of Microsoft, the first ideas that come to mind are probably productivity and business. When Satya Nadella took over the company last year, one of his key goals was to make people love Microsoft and its products. In a new mission statement sent to Microsoft employees, Nadella said gaming would be key in realizing his broader vision for Windows. The company wants to unite all of its gaming-oriented initiatives. Nadella emphasized that gaming across Xbox One, Windows devices, and HoloLens belongs at the heart of his vision for the future of the company.

Nadella sees gaming as a way to increase Microsoft’s appeal to consumers. By bringing Xbox games to all of its platforms through features like game streaming, Nadella hopes that customers will use more of their products. For example, customers who would have just considered an Xbox One will now consider a Windows 10 device to stream games when they are not in front of their televisions.

Speaking about the future of the company, Nadella also said that Microsoft aims to deliver experiences centered on the mobility that is enabled by the cloud. While no other details accompanied this statement, I think it refers to the ability to experience your existing content, like games, on smartphones.

When announcing Nadella’s appointment, Microsoft highlighted his work in establishing the cloud infrastructure behind Xbox. Soon after he took over, Nadella changed the Xbox division considerably by appointing Phil Spencer as the Head of Xbox. The company further stressed their commitment to gaming when they purchased Mojang, announced game streaming to Windows 10 and recently, announced backward compatibility so that Xbox One would host the largest library of games for any next-generation console.

By putting the gamer at the center of every experience, Microsoft will succeed in changing their image and be loved by consumers. People will choose Microsoft products because they will love the ecosystem. The Xbox community includes incredibly passionate gamers. They love their console and they love their games. Nadella’s decision to focus on games and increase investment in Xbox and HoloLens will draw a lot of these passionate individuals further into Microsoft’s ecosystem. It will establish them as lifelong fans. In my opinion, the long-term success of a company depends on this.

Before I bought an Xbox One, I just owned an Xbox 360 and no other Microsoft product. However, after I bought the new console and recently heard about game streaming, HoloLens and other Microsoft projects, I decided to give their other devices a try. I purchased the Microsoft Band and loved it. After that, I bought a Surface 3 and loved it. I even went as far as installing Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro just to stream games.

Nadella’s new approach to convert Xbox fans to their ecosystem by offering services that gamers like me cannot pass is definitely working. Looking back, I would never have thought I would ever own so many Microsoft products. I am even considering buying a Windows Phone when the new update comes out. Nadella’s approach is definitely the right direction for the company. I cannot wait to see what other services Microsoft will offer Xbox gamers in the future. It is definitely an exciting time to be a part of Microsoft’s ecosystem and it is only going to get better.
