Overkill’s The Walking Dead will be a Payday-like experience

At SXSW, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman did a panel titled “Creator Activism: A Discussion with Robert Kirkman,” where he was asked about the upcoming Walking Dead game being developed by Overkill, the developer behind Payday. During the panel Kirkman said The Walking Dead game will be “online and interactive” and “it will be Payday-esque.”

“I can say that it will be Payday-esque because are currently doing Payday,” Kirkman said. “But I’m told it will be in a bigger world than Payday currently encompasses. They are going to be learning a lot of stuff from Payday that they will be incorporating into The Walking Dead game.”

“There will be announcements about that game very soon.”

“One thing that we are doing, which I think is very cool about the Telltale game and the Starbreeze game and Air game is that they are all licensed games, and licensed games are usually somewhat crappy, but thankfully our’s aren’t,” he said. “The key I think, which is very important, is that we’re not doing, ‘Hey, it’s Daryl Dixon running around shooting zombies, because you like Daryl Dixon.’ Or ‘It’s Rick Grimes doing this because you like Rick Grimes.’ We’re telling our own stories and doing our own things almost as if they are original games.”

“Most licensed games have some lackluster element to them because it’s like, ‘You have to hit this date, sorry,'” he said. “We’ll just push things back and make it good.”

The game was announced by Starbreeze back in August of 2014 but details have been scarce since then. Check the teaser trailer below!

So let’s hope this Walking Dead game has a high level of polish and gets plenty of development time. Does a Payday style Walking Dead game entice you? Considering I love all things Walking Dead, this game has my interest piqued and I’m anxiously awaiting the reveal!
