Update: Star Trek Online launches on September 6 for Xbox One.
It looks like another PC MMO will be making its way to console this year. Cryptic Studios’ hugely popular MMO, Star Trek Online, will be following the likes of Neverwinter and DC Universe Online onto Xbox One sometime this fall.
Not only will be getting a port of the PC version without any cut corners but we will also be seeing huge redesigns and visual improvements. The enhanced port will bring a host of visual changes, adding “several modern lighting technologies” including differed lighting, light probes, and improvements to the game’s limited High Dynamic Range. The UI for STO will also be completely overhauled in order to not only work on console but to work with the gigantic control overhaul that the team has done.
Stephen Ricossa, the executive producer of STO, said in a blog post that, “Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a 12 button controller. We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it. A combination of radial menus and streamlining of some HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.”
