Tekken X Street Fighter no longer in active development

Update: GameSpot misquoted statements made by Tekken 7 developers. The developers hinted that the Xbox One version might be announced soon.

Bandai Namco have released two disappointing statements about the future of the Tekken series, especially to Xbox One owners. In an interview with Gamespot, game director Katsuhiro Harada announced that the very long-awaited Tekken X Street Fighter is no longer in active development after a number of delays since its announcement.

While 2012’s Street Fighter X Tekken did quite well critically, although not so well sales-wise, Harada claims that the reason the game has ceased active development is because they “don’t want to split the communities” especially considering when trying to find “a window in which to release” the game in between Street Fighter V and Tekken 7.

This comes with the news that the next main instalment in the Tekken series, Tekken 7, will not be coming to the Xbox One. While Bandai Namco are not revealing a release date for the title outside of Japan yet, they have announced that Sony’s console will be the exclusive platform for the next Tekken.

This is a very disappointing announcement for fans of the Tekken series and for fans who have been eagerly awaiting both Tekken 7 and Tekken X Street Fighter. But, while we may not be able to enjoy future Tekken titles for the time being, we can all enjoy the amazing backwards compatible Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I hope that Bandai changes their mind about Tekken’s exclusivity in the future but what do you think? Tell us in the comments below.
